A typical AC ballast is a 3 stage device. First, the ballast converts AC to DC. Second, the DC is regulated so that the voltage is right for the ballast. Third, a frequency generator creates the high frequency needed to excite the gas and make light. A DC Ballast, on the other hand, uses only stages two and three. In this system the AC to DC conversion is done separately, at the NPS-1000 unit. This system is ideal for applications where:
- Solar panels will be installed in the future
- Low installation-cost occupancy sensors are advantageous
- Backup batteries are to be integrated into the system
- Low Voltage wiring offers advantages
